Legends of Otjikoto Lake

The Otjikoto Lake is a bottomless lake and its depths contain a safe with 6 million gold Reichsmarks. A known fact is that German forces, on the brink of surrender to South African troops in 1915, dumped 5 cannons, 10 cannon bases, 3 gatling guns and between 300 and 400 wagonloads of ammunition into its depths.
Some of these items were retrieved and is on display at the Tsumeb Museum. The remainder serves as an underwater museum to certified divers.

Also of interest is the fact that Lake Guinas and Otjikoto contain a critically endangered species of fish, the Otjikoto Tilapia, which evolved and was discovered in Lake Guinas and introduced to Otjikoto Lake.
